The trailer of ‘Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story’ has unveiled the production of Paramount Network’s creation, which is scheduled for a commercial launch on July 30.
The series of the six-part movie opens with 911 calls which report about the shooting of a 17-year-old by George Zimmerman.
Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, the aggrieved parents of the teenager are shown to find out the genesis of the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement. It begins with the teen’s shooting on a fateful day of Feb. 26, 2012. It is clear that the teen was defenceless at that time. It galvanized a nationwide crusade that created Martin as a leading organizer of a social justice wave.
Zimmerman had used Florida’s Stand Your Ground law as justification for the cold-blooded shooting of the teen. The incident was happened to be claimed in a self-defence. He was acquitted of second-degree murder and other related charges in July 2013.
The trailer offers a bird’s eye view at some of the protests which were sparked by the shooting and later culminated into Zimmerman’s acquittal. Many of the marchers carried signs which displayed Martin’s face and the phrase which reads as “Justice for Trayvon.”
Besides his parents, the movie on Martin incorporate a few interviews, especially with the lawyer, Benjamin Crump, Angela Davis and a few others who were closely associated with the case.
The film is dubbed as the second effort of Jay’s into telling a story about the impact of the contemporary criminal justice system on black youth. It looks a sort of in the footsteps of 2017’s Peabody Award-winning Spiek TV movie, titled TIME: The Kalief Browder Story.
The movie pursued the story or rather agony of the young black man from the Bronx who spent three years at Rikers Island Prison just for allegedly stealing a backpack. He committed suicide at the age of 22.
The series is originally comprised of six episodes. Its team of production includes Sybrina Fulton, Tracy Martin, Michael Gasparro, Julia Willoughby Nason, and Nick Sandow, besides a few others. Furst and Nason will be directing the series.
